Before you leave a place, there’s that awkward “in-between” period. You know, when you’re still living in New York or Akron or Bangkok (or wherever you’re from) — but you’re like thiiiis close from boarding a plane for somewhere else. So you’re officially in-between places. And, for me, that in-between state became super, sadly real last night. At a karaoke bar.
Moe’s Bar & Lounge in Fort Greene is not quite a dive or lounge. I guess it’s both? Anyway, I listened to friends bravely belt out everything from “Don’t Speak” (No Doubt)” to “Lovers & Friends” (Lil John ft. Ludacris & Usher). At one point, my friend, Tinu, put her EVERYTHING into “At Last” (Etta James), working the crowd and crooning the final notes as she fell to floor. UGH, my friends! I cannot handle how sad I will be to say goodbye. But, for now, I’m still here in New York. And we’re going out dancing tonight. So it’s not over yet.
